I’ve had the new iPhone 3GS for a little over a week now. Using it day-to-day over the course of that time, I have a pretty good feel for it. A good enough feel to answer the question that every single person seems to be asking: “Should I get it?”

The answer to that is not so simple. And so I’m going to break it down a bunch of different ways based mainly on the device’s functionality and who I think is considering buying it.

Despite warnings from AT&T that claimed high demand for the new iPhone 3G S would prevent it from shipping pre-orders by the June 19 launch date, Apple is still promising to satisfy all web pre-orders with a Friday delivery.

The Boy Genius Report cited internal sources at AT&T as saying that customers who had not ordered the new phone by June 15 would have to wait one to two weeks after the launch to receive their order or stand in line to buy one.

On Saturday, you'll be able to buy the eagerly-awaited Palm Pre smartphone on the Sprint network. The Pre is, depending on how you look at it, just another phone, or the savior of Palm, the company that practically invented the PDA (personal digital assistant) with the Pilot and later smartphone category with the Treo.

New screenshots supposedly reveal that Apple is in the process of readying the iTunes Store interface for the iPhone to allow direct download access to movies, TV shows, and music videos. The new capability would be an added convenience for the increasing number of people who watch video on a mobile device, but holes in the story have us holding off on the excitement for now.

Even as Apple has insisted it's content to give AT&T exclusive access to the iPhone, a closer look at Apple's own devices -- and a likely dead-end in growth through its existing carrier strategy -- shows that Apple may have little choice but to sell its smartphone through Verizon and other carriers by 2011 at the latest.
